What is Zink whiskers?
Zinc Whiskers are small hair-like structures of zinc that grow from surfaces that have been electro-galvanized. After several years of accumulation, these can, in some cases, spread through the air to computer equipment in data centers, causing short circuits on circuit boards. The phenomenon in data centers was initially noticed from the raised floors commonly used, where the supports for these were made of electro-galvanized material.
How do you avoid Zinc Whiskers?
When installing in places like server rooms, it's advantageous to opt for wire trays with Z4 surface treatment and cable trays with Sendzimir galvanized (MP-S) accessories.
Z4 and Zink whiskers
One of the advantages of Z4 compared to zinc whiskers is its reduced tendency to generate these small zinc structures. Z4, a type of coating that combines zinc, aluminum, and magnesium, has been shown to decrease the risk of zinc whisker formation compared to pure zinc coating. This makes Z4 a more advantageous choice where concerns about zinc whiskers exist or where efforts are made to minimize such risks.
Does hot-dip galvanizing contain zinc whiskers?
When it comes to hot-dip galvanized products, which are usually galvanized according to SS-EN ISO 1461, it means that the entire cable trays or wire trays are dipped in a zinc bath after manufacturing. This method does not cause Zinc Whiskers, but larger 'beards' of zinc can form at bends and edges, which may later detach from the product.

1990 was the year Patrik Hillström was employed at MP bolagen, so he has been on a fantastic journey over the years. He has tried the role of salesman, but now Patrik is responsible for product development of our steel products such as cable ladders etc.
It is a well-managed company that is not afraid to develop and invest, he thinks.
A bit of a training junkie with a lot of focus according to colleagues, but also someone who likes outdoor life.
He don't have a direct favorite destination, but a trip with the cab is never wrong. Best is still a beautiful sparkling winter day on the ski track, which is hard to beat, says Patrik.
